It is becoming increasingly difficult to cover up what is happening. Satan has workers everywhere & Michelle Bachmann is 1 of them; an old spirit in a new body.Same goes for Dr. Benjamin Carson. Many believe this man to be on the Saints side, but I tell you that he is NOT. Since America’s torture of prisoners was made public, Obama banned all forms of information gathering through torture – Executive Order 13491. This is a presidential order, meaning that the moment Obama steps down, another president can change that order bc it is not a law & has NOT been voted in by Congress. News teams have asked Benjamin Carson if he would keep or dismiss Obama’s decision not to torture prisoners for information gathering, if he is to become president. Benjamin Carson refused to comment while other candidates had no problem saying that they will maintain Obama’s decision not to torture prisoners.

Also as I told you, the next president is the Anti-Christ. You will have a new executive making new executive orders for the ‘sake of the people’ & to the saints demise. As for congress, the new executive will run the show as made evident through the Iran deal & overstepping congress. Like the Vietnam War…congress declares /officiates it a war, though Vietnam was never declared a war. Just another ‘presidential’ decision, it was deemed a battle w/many casualties, casualties such as that of a world war.

People may not like me (including the church), but I say it how it is, while I play no favorites. If these people do not listen to me, it’s to their own peril. You might think I’m just another guy posting scripture & talking ‘end times.’ I WISH I WAS JUST ANOTHER GUY. But an ordinary 1 who didn’t post to Facebook at all! But if I did post to Facebook, just a post about how my day is going or where I am eating w/friends.

You ever vomit in your mouth then swallow it back up? That’s what you’re doing. You think I like being the outcast & have everyone look at me differently, including my closest loved 1s? I can’t help but to speak up!

Hardship is coming & you need to be reminded what to do (knowledge), why you are doing it (understanding) & how to do it (the applicable skill set) so that you can make it out of this mess.

Gun Humor

I intended this post to be a comment on someone’s page concerning their post on the “American Breakfast” (picture of breakfast & a gun). Instead I’ll forward her the post link as a comment. I need everyone to hear what I have to say bc it is for your own good that I say it:

A little humor like this & all you do is subconsciously propagandize all the current issues involving guns. The media plays both good cop & bad cop & the public gets suckered – The serpent is crafty – Genesis 3:1. The media is a tool & a means to push these doctrines of devils (1 Timothy 4:1); they only elicit negative emotions on issues like guns & terrorism. For instance, Obama’s gun control (bad cop – condemns guns) is like telling a child you can’t have this toy bc you’ve been bad; but the kid ends up wanting it that much more. Then the media blows up the war on extremism/terrorism (good cop – commends having guns ‘for protection’). Almost every other article has something to do w/terrorism or extremism…& what’s that do? Diverts your attention away from the food & water crisis; crisis bc there is hardly any food or water left – droughts, contaminated food & water, & the bees that are necessary for agriculture are just about extinct (Leviticus 26:26 the staff of your bread)…

Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils – 1 Timothy 4:1

It’s no wonder so many abandon the faith! An excerpt –

Jerry Falwell Jr.’s words to the students of Liberty University at the close of a recent chapel service revealed that he was carrying a gun in his back pocket, Falwell declared, “I’ve always thought that if more good people had concealed-carry permits, then we could end those Muslims before they walked in & killed them.”

Falwell then encouraged his students to get their own concealed carry permit (via a free school sponsored course) so that together they could “teach [those Muslims] a lesson if they ever show up here.” His words were met w/rapturous support by the student body. So this is how Christianity dies…w/thunderous applause.

“Christianity is facing an existential crisis in America not bc our pews aren’t quite as packed as they used to be but bc – through an embrace of violence, hatred towards Muslims, callous rejection of refugees, demonization of the LGBT community, & a whole host of starkly anti-Christian actions – we’ve allowed the gospel of Jesus to be supplanted w/sanctified & extreme right wing politics. It’s no secret that American Christianity has been hijacked by the political right since at least the days of the Moral Majority. But in recent months & years we’ve witnessed a full-frontal assault on the particular & peculiar values that define the Christian life.”

For example, the way of Jesus is a way of peace & a sometimes unfathomable commitment to nonviolence, but American preachers can now carry an instrument of death into a space dedicated to the proclamation of life & be met w/boisterous applause. The way of Jesus places caring for the stranger at the center of salvation itself, but in our fear we’ve closed our hearts & our borders to immigrants & refugees in need, leaving them to drown in the open sea, wither in the desert & fall victim to unspeakable evil in their homeland.

There are manifold explanations for how we got here, but at its root, authentic Christianity is being eradicated in America bc the way of Jesus has been replaced by a list of ideas which, once agreed to, apparently liberate us from actually living like Jesus.

We say we believe in the Bible & God & that Jesus rose from the dead, but once we claim our certificate of orthodoxy we seem to think we’ve been freed from the obligations of grace, from the cost of discipleship, from the way of Jesus that is defined not simply by the ideas in our head but the actions of our lives.”

This is why we are being judged. This is why we will end up w/no food & no water. Gun “humor” like this only encourages transgression; transgression all the way through the gates of it’s going to suck to be you (Matthew 7:13).

If you want to help w/the cause, quit posting about guns, quit posting about Obama (the Bible reads, that you should not speak ill toward the ruler of thy people), QUIT POSTING ABOUT GUNS, QUIT POSTING ABOUT TERRORISTS & right wing politics. Post about the floods devastating the earth, the earthquakes, the volcanic eruptions, the 5th year historic drought, the blackouts, the fires, the fog, the sinkholes, the pestilences; EVERY COUNTRY IS IN A STATE OF EMERGENCY –

By simply having the gun you’ve already transgressed & are cursed for it bc when you NEED it — your heart has already departed from the LORD for resting your faith on it. When you NEED it — then what? You shoot someone — therefore transgressing. Thou shalt not kill & he that killeth w/the sword must be killed w/the sword.

If you insist on leaving your post on “some gun humor” (2 Timothy 2:16), then I suggest that you dislike your like on that comment, or delete the comment entirely “mine own mouth shall condemn me” (Job 9:20).

Censored & Distorted Truths

I dreamt about people taking my words for their own & changing them to suit their agenda &/or the agenda of the powers of the darkness of this world (Ephesians 6:12 –possibly unbeknownst to these very people). In my dream, young men & women would listen to me while sitting over graves of people that were buried alive, & then they vomited over their graves (distorting what I say). These people buried alive, would try to get out of these graves, but there wasn’t too much fight left in them, & as they squirmed, demons (people working for the dark powers) would sit on top of them &d keep vomiting. I understand this dream. This dream wasn’t hard to interpret.

Let this be known, I’m not here to compete w/others to minister to you. There was a time that I could care less about “religious people”. If I indulged them & listened to their malarkey, I’d just roll my eyes, mind myself & then move on. Secretly, I am still like this! I didn’t ask for this privilege (more like a curse if you ask me, dealing w/recalcitrant people is no fun) & I am not self-appointed…believe me!

Albert Einstein once said, “he who has a privilege of knowing, has the duty & obligation to act.” So there you go…I’m posting & posting, & giving you cards, & put a digital LED scrolling sign on the back of my car…why? Bc you think I want followers or love the rejection? I want neither! All I want is for you to get it bc contrary to popular belief, I CARE enough to speak the truth (now more than ever bc I see the sword coming) though you boo me off the stage, I still speak.

Funny, how I don’t care for a following, like this is some sort of popularity contest; me against the ministers, lol. Any other day, I’d give these ministers/pastors/teachers the Prom King &d Queen crowns bc I prefer the quiet & don’t talk to me life. But from what I’ve seen, they just aren’t cutting it & we are down to the wire, so I’m going to give you a push in the right direction.

I want you to snap out of it & wake up to the signs of the time, for your own sake & for the sake of your families. I just happen to be the face that’s saying it. But if it were up to me, I’d vigilante anonymous what I tell you so that I don’t have to deal w/people recognizing me! But, it is written that a man not ought to cover his face bc he is the image & Glory of God (1 Corinthians 11:7). So yes, you will recognize me wherever I go & I will have to dodge the rotten food you throw at me. Why even bother telling you? Bc I care enough to!

I am a guy who calls it as he sees it bc I can clearly see things for what they are. I have read the Bible (sadly, I cannot say that I read the bible on my own accord, bc it was only after God put the fear of Him inside of me – I’ve discussed what happened to me in previous posts — but I read it, nevertheless) & I’m just SHOCKED at how the WORD has been diluted. How can you read what I read & still get it all wrong?

The reason for this post — My dream was a warning. I’ve seen & already dealt w/people that have made my dream a reality. I can’t have them vomit over your graves. I would be remiss if I continue to let it go. I posted this earlier “Gun Humor” – https://www.facebook.com/al.masch.50/posts/474484852731200. In response to what I saw on a Facebook page. I’m that much more critical on those professing faith bc when the time comes people will go to them for answers. This person (gun humor) has once accused me of removing my comments when I see that I have opposition, but that is not true. I prefer to use the opposition & make a lesson of it, for all to see.

I commented on her post & she removed the comment. Although I argued sensibly & offered valid points, my comment is gone. Why would she remove my comment? Then she posted w/the following shortly after & I commented. & once again she removed my comment. She said I censure? I do not, unless you are vulgar, I will not censor. But she censures me. Unless I am drawn to something, I ignore it.

Another public post of hers that followed my gun comment:

So many leaders are being lead astray. They speak & teach of God but they have been deceived. This is what the Holy spirit has shown me. These leaders are not lead by the Holy spirit they are being lead by a spirit called legion. Legion means spirit of many. This is not just 1 specific spirit its many spirits all at once. This spirit is manifesting like crazy. It is trying to take the place of the Holy spirit. Things to look out for when dealing w/this spirit (being very offensive when correction is involved, backbitting others, not seeking guidance from mentors or seeking counsel from spiritual leaders, talking about what they have done, how much there ministry is growing bc of what they have done & not what God has done, People who are calling themselves into the ministry field when God hasn’t called them to minister, people who do nothing but speak of God like he is rainbows & sunshine, God corrects those he loves, those who laugh uncontrollably while preaching God is a God of joy but he is also a God of order, 1s who are astro traveling in the spirit w/no purpose but to brag about traveling in the spirit). How do we begin to realize who these people are we must read the written word of God, we must spend time in his prescience. The spirit of legion wants to bring you into a comfortable place where everything is OK. Don’t fall for this spirit arm yourselves w/the word of God.

My comment as a response:

Depends on the correction? If a correction is accompanied w/scripture then it is not what you find offensive, bc it wouldn’t be a correction if it was intended to lead the people astray. Legion does not correct or instruct in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16). The devils house would be divided if that were so, & a house divided cannot stand (Mark 3:22-25). Was John the Baptist or Christ possessed by Legion? Some (in fact a lot of Pharisees & Sadducees found them offensive & even accused them in like manner similar to your accusation).

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness – 2 Timothy 3:16

Mark 3:22-25 a house divided

Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell? – Matthew 23:33

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? – Matthew 3:7

No, the opposite is true. Legion does not like to be corrected bc legion would find it offensive & write a post about it. I am certainly not here to give this people a spoon full of sugar to make the medicine go down (correction some might find offensive – better me than the Judge). Correction is a tough pill to swallow, rainbows & sunshine as you eloquently put it (I agree w/that much – but it’s also contradicting.)

Additionally you say “astro traveling” in the spirit w/no purpose but to brag about traveling in the spirit, you lost me – bc John “astro traveled” & his intention was to warn not brag about himself traveling in the spirit – see Revelation. Those who can “astro travel” I’m sure are not bragging, but warning. You might interpret it as bragging, but highly unlikely if God has allowed said person to be capable of it. Maybe I just don’t understand what you mean by “astro travel”. I mean no offense by this, but in your posts you say that God is love (something people would agree with) then you slip in the jargon.

So when a person likes your comment, they essentially may like parts of it & not the whole. But in liking it as the whole they commit then condemn themselves by the action of “liking” it. I was taught to always read a contract & if you don’t like some of the wording, to comment &/or annotate below your signature…My “like” is my signature bc I agree that God is Love & I’m not here to just minister sunshine; but here also, is my comment.

I intentionally do not look on your Facebook pages bc what I don’t know won’t hurt me…& lately I see a lot that hurts me. So bc I am not a glutton for pain, I intentionally avoid your Facebook pages like it were the plague…
Unless I am compelled, like in the instance for her page…somehow she popped up in my news feed (very rarely does this happen bc I unfollow the majority of you bc again, I’m not a glutton for punishment). But it happened, & now I see why.

As I warned her, I will block her. She will have to find another channel in to see what I have to say on my Facebook. My dream is accurate. You have censored me bc you are ashamed of my words & bc you care to be a leader over the graves of this people. Another day, I’d give you the prom queen crown…but its not another day…it’s the end of days. You didn’t start posting “godly” until after you heard about me & you saw my posts. Now you call yourself a prophetess. You tell people they have special anointing’s. You won’t be cherry picking my words anymore then changing them.

I had a similar thing happen to me with a catholic. I told her that catholics have taken the word away & have added their words in place of God’s word. I pointed out MANY instances. This person also censored me & ultimately blocked me altogether. Saved me from blocking her; as Christ said…

And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. – Matthew 10: 14-15

Bc they choose not the love for the truth; so I will kick the dust off my shoes as a testimony against them.

The World Looks Away as Ebola Surges

Ebola is spreading again, but the world isn’t interested
As international interest in Ebola wanes, the virus has again spiked in West Africa, according to figures released by the World Health Organization (WHO) Wednesday. In the final week of January, rates of new infections rose for the 1st time in 2015 in all 3 West African nations worst hit by Ebola. “There were 124 new confirmed cases reported in the week to 1 February: 39 in Guinea, 5 in Liberia, & 80 in Sierra Leone,” the WHO said in its latest situation report on the disease.

A total of 22,495 people have been infected by the disease since the worst outbreak on record began in late 2013. The WHO’s latest figures put the death toll at 8,981. At least half the people who are hospitalized w/the strain of Ebola ravaging West Africa won’t survive the disease, according to the latest fatality rate estimates. The uptick in new cases came after weeks of optimism that the outbreak was slowly receding. In mid-January, the WHO declared the fight against Ebola had reached a “turning point” after infection rates plummeted across Liberia, Guinea & Sierra Leone. However, Dr. Christopher Dye, the director of strategy in the office of the director general of WHO, conceded at the time there was “no basis for complacency” in fighting Ebola bc there was always the risk of a resurgence of the virus.

Similar sentiments were expressed by David Nabarro, the U.N. system coordinator for Ebola just days earlier. “We have a very attractive & promising situation that leads us to believe that perhaps we are beginning to see the end of the outbreak…Unfortunately it’s not quite as simple & the reason for that is any case of Ebola in the region can restart an outbreak very quickly,” he said in January.

Ebola Not Hot
As Ebola appears to once again be in resurgence, international interest in the epidemic is dropping. According to Google search data, U.S. interest in Ebola has been in a dramatic decline since late October 2014. Interest spiked shortly after news broke that a doctor had tested positive for the disease in New York. “I think largely the human impulse is to say we’re worried bc it could reach our shores,” assistant professor in epidemiology at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health Dana March told CBS. “The attention has really diverted away from the epidemic; people aren’t seeing it as a threat in the U.S. anymore.”

Meanwhile, the Washington Post compared Google searches on Ebola w/measles. Interest in the latter disease surpassed Ebola somewhere in mid January. “Measles, hot. Ebola, not,” the Post’s Philip Bump concluded. However, decreasing interest isn’t limited to the United States. Worldwide search data from Google shows a similar, gradual decrease in Ebola related searches over the past 3 months. It’s also not just Google users that don’t see Ebola as a priority.

Earlier this week, the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) released new research suggesting less than half of international donations earmarked for the battle against Ebola reached affected countries. According to the study, around US$2.9 billion was pledged to fight Ebola in 2014, but only US$1.9 billion arrived by the year’s end in the West African nations struggling w/the disease. “These delays … may have contributed to the spreading of the virus,” explained Karen Grepin, the head researcher behind the grim new study. Testing of a new drug that could help victims is also being put on hold, according to an announcement from Doctors Without Borders on Wednesday. According to the agency, there simply “aren’t enough sick people” for the study to continue.

I have personally met smart people who are clearly just ‘not all there’ upon discussing this deadly & GLOBAL drought I have heard various responses, such as “well it rained just the other day” or “climate change.” My response to these uninformed comments is simple: water main breaks. Billions of gallons of water already lost. Do an internet search for ‘water main breaks’ & pick a state. Not just California, the whole nation. I’m sure you’ve heard of at least 1?

Can their (‘their’ referring to scientists, meteorologists, politicians, actors, etc.) unfounded & simply straight stupid ‘Climate Change theory’ explain the water main breaks? I hope you notice that this is a rhetorical question since I do not need an answer bc you already have my EDUCATED opinion on the matter. I have heard California is too wealthy; that they won’t let water run out. Really? That was a BIGGO rhetorical really btw. Will you bribe God who rains waters from the heavens w/money? The wealthy will have water (but their money won’t save them for long – see Ezekiel 7:19), but the dwindling middle class & poor will not. Speaking of money, do we have water like you have unlimited funds in your bank account? You probably don’t have unlimited funds do you? Neither do we have water.

Aren’t you a least bit curious that ‘they’ changed “Global Warming” to “Climate Change”? Perhaps this is bc ‘warming’ isn’t really conducive to FREEZING TEMPERATURES across the Nation, nay World ergo Climate Change anyone?

The devil is crafty (Genesis 3:1) as he has been (through his servants who work the private & public sectors in the media & high ranking government jobs that control the summary & propagandize) as he has been, indoctrinating you to believe in “Global Warming” but he is NOT God & didn’t see FREEZING coming. I spoke to a Christian at the beach recently who held up a sign that read “Repent or go to HELL; Christ is coming.” So I said to him, ‘you think He is coming now?’ He said ‘maybe now or maybe later.’ So I mentioned to him the aforementioned drought. He asked me ‘wouldn’t it be grand if God we’re causing this drought?’ My response “umm, yeah, He is.” Then I continued, ‘you know the prophecy in Daniel 9:27 that speaks of the covenant w/Israel by the Antichrist that kick starts the 7-year tribulation?’ He responded with ‘yes sure I do.’ I solidified that the devil is crafty & he agreed, ‘sure he is.’ I went on to inquire, couldn’t the devil have reworded ‘the covenant’ so as to not alarm the church (Matthew 24:24) & again, he agreed w/’yeah.’ I said, “something like the peace framework proposal by Secretary of State John F. Kerry?” He was stumped & then said ‘no, no, God would tell me, God will give me a sign.’ So I said, “do you remember that Jesus said:

A wicked & adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed. – Matthew 16:4

and he confirmed, ‘yeah, I do.’ So I asked him if he knew what Jonas did, but I told him anyway. After 3 days in the belly of a fish, Jonas went on into Nineveh & warned every1 that their sin was great, & instructed them to REPENT or else God would destroy the city. What did Jonas do? What sign is “except for the sign of Jonas”? Don’t you know that God is telling you, God is giving you the SIGN OF JONAS, “hello, I’m right here, warning you as Jonas warned Nineveh!” But he rolled his eyes at me & said ‘God will tell me.’ Clearly you hear NO SOUND coming from my SOUND argument.

It should be the rainy season. Instead Sao Paulo state is experiencing a 3rd consecutive year w/soaring temperatures & rainfall patterns well below historic records. The main water reservoirs are operating at their lowest capacity. The Cantareira reservoir system, which serves more than 9 million people in the state, is only 5% full. At the Alto Tietê reservoir network, which supplies 3 million people in greater Sao Paulo, water levels are below 15%.

Simple calculations indicate that given the current level of consumption versus the predicted raining patterns there is only enough water on the system to last 4 to 6 months. That means the water could run out before the next rainy season starts in November. State officials recently announced a potential rationing program of 5 days w/out water & 2 days with, in case the February & March rains do not refill the reservoirs.

This extreme climate scenario, combined with a series of management flaws, political negligence & a culture of waste & pollution, is bringing the largest metropolitan region of Brazil to the brink of collapse. Since 2013, after decades of warnings about misguided development policies & destructive land use practices, experts & civil society organisations have been calling for increasingly strong measures to reduce water consumption to keep the minimum secure levels for supply reservoirs. The calls have been ignored by the state government – the system’s main operator – & federal & municipal authorities turned a blind eye to the severity of the situation.

The government took a few small steps in early 2014, such as offering a discount on water bills for people who voluntarily reduced their consumption. It also increased supply from the Billings & Guarapiranga reservoirs, but as these sources receive most of the urban waste from Sao Paulo, the water needs to be carefully tested & treated to be adequate for human consumption, adding to the complexity of securing safe water supply during the drought.

The government’s main initiative has been to reduce pressure on the distribution network, so that it pumps less water through the system. As the measure was not officially recognised by leaders or the media, people were unprepared to live w/out drinkable water for a couple of days when the supply glitches started to happen. Taken by the population as a de facto rationing, the lack of transparency about the times & places affected by pressure reduction caused more problems & increased distrust among Sao Paulo’s citizens.

The recovery measures adopted so far account for a 22% reduction on the water volume extracted from reservoirs. Experts, however, advise that the reduction should be around 50% to sustain the minimal conditions needed for the system. Many might be surprised that such a scenario is happening in a tropical country famous for its abundance of natural resources, crossed by 100s of rivers & w/plenty of underground water. But for regional environmentalists & experts it comes as no surprise. They have been raising the alarm on water pollution & campaigning for watershed protection & safety standards since the 1980s. But scientific & technical reports, advocacy measures & pressures on companies were lost among the apparently unstoppable powers of real estate, agriculture & industry development. Urban land use, extensive monocultures & illegal occupation of watersheds have damaged & polluted the water production areas, jeopardising their capacity to survive & recover from extended dry seasons.

National development policies strongly focus on macro-infrastructure plans such as large hydrodams, ports & roads, the expansion of agribusiness into the Amazon, & the predatory mining industry. These sustain the exports of soya, beef & pig iron while being responsible for the majority of Brazilian greenhouse gas emissions. More & more scientific studies show the link between deforestation in the north & the reduction of rainfall in the southeast, presenting further evidence of how the effects of climate change are already upon us.

Despite the relative gains in poverty reduction over the last decade, the imminent collapse of the water supply system of the richest region in Brazil shows that basic development structures have yet to be addressed & fundamental human rights have yet to be secured in this country. Millions of people from the poorest communities have entered the consumer market, but their access to housing, sanitation, clean water, citizen security & transport remain unguarded.

This is where an old cliché becomes real: major opportunities lie w/in this crisis. The transcending effect of the water shortage creates a space for unity & coordination among Brazilian social movements. It offers the chance for environmental organisations to link deforestation w/urban issues, to communicate that social justice will not be achieved as long as the priority is given to an unequal & unsustainable development model. Moreover, the urgency & scale of the water crisis is likely to bring NGOs & labour unions closer to the organic & youth protests that drew 100s of 1000s of people to the streets in 2013. The time & place for a solid narrative that links poverty reduction to ecological protection seems finally to have arrived.

In October 2014, more than 40 NGOs, experts, independent collectives & social movements joined forces to launch the Alliance for Water, a network that is monitoring the government’s response to the crisis & presenting positive solutions for surviving the probable collapse. The alliance aims to collaborate to build a new culture of water use & conservation in Sao Paulo & is producing a series of technical reports & events to qualify the debate among a wide range stakeholders, from specialists to politicians to social movements & grassroots groups.

Today more than 13 million inhabitants of Sao Paulo state find themselves on the edge of an unprecedented public calamity. The absence of political leadership & government transparency fuels panic & fear. Until now, the government has not outlined a clear emergency plan to guarantee minimum water supplies for essential services such as hospitals, police stations & prisons, & for the poorest people who have no structure to store or buy mineral water. A chaotic scenario might take place where, faced with a severe & sustained lack of water, many communities will resort to polluted sources or even violence, raising significant concerns over safety & health.

Civil society has a pivotal role to play by challenging development models, establishing social control over emergency plans, securing human rights & promoting the values of ethics & solidarity. As is usual in calamity situations, the most vulnerable, poorest communities are likely to pay the highest price w/their health & their dignity. These people need to know they can count on organised civil society to support them across the turbulent times that lie ahead.

California has about one year of water left. Will you ration now?

Given the historic low temperatures & snowfalls that pummeled the eastern U.S. this winter, it might be easy to overlook how devastating California’s winter was as well. As our “wet” season draws to a close, it is clear that the paltry rain & snowfall have done almost nothing to alleviate epic drought conditions. January was the driest in California since record-keeping began in 1895. Groundwater & snowpack levels are at all-time lows. We’re not just up a creek w/out a paddle in California, we’re losing the creek too.

Data from NASA satellites show that the total amount of water stored in the Sacramento & San Joaquin river basins – that is, all of the snow, river & reservoir water, water in soils & groundwater combined – was 34 million acre-feet below normal in 2014. That loss is nearly 1.5 times the capacity of Lake Mead, America’s largest reservoir.

Statewide, we’ve been dropping more than 12 million acre-feet of total water yearly since 2011. Roughly 2/3s of these losses are attributable to groundwater pumping for agricultural irrigation in the Central Valley. Farmers have little choice but to pump more groundwater during droughts, especially when their surface water allocations have been slashed 80% to 100%. But these pumping rates are excessive & unsustainable. Wells are running dry. In some areas of the Central Valley, the land is sinking by 1 foot or more per year.

As difficult as it may be to face, the simple fact is that California is running out of water & the problem started before our current drought. NASA data reveal that total water storage in California has been in steady decline since at least 2002, when satellite-based monitoring began, although groundwater depletion has been going on since the early 20th century. Right now the state has only about 1 year of water supply left in its reservoirs, & our strategic backup supply, groundwater, is rapidly disappearing. California has no contingency plan for a persistent drought like this 1 (let alone a 20-plus-year mega-drought), except, apparently, staying in emergency mode & praying for rain.

In short, we have no paddle to navigate this crisis. Several steps need be taken right now. 1st, immediate mandatory water rationing should be authorized across all of the state’s water sectors, from domestic & municipal through agricultural & industrial. The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is already considering water rationing by the summer unless conditions improve. There is no need for the rest of the state to hesitate. The public is ready. A recent Field Poll showed that 94% of Californians surveyed believe that the drought is serious, & that 1/3 support mandatory rationing.

2nd, the implementation of the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act of 2014 should be accelerated. The law requires the formation of numerous, regional groundwater sustainability agencies by 2017. Then each agency must adopt a plan by 2022 & “achieve sustainability” 20 years after that. At that pace, it will be nearly 30 years before we even know what is working. By then, there may be no groundwater left to sustain. 3rd, the state needs a task force of thought leaders that starts, right now, brainstorming to lay the groundwork for long-term water management strategies. Although several state task forces have been formed in response to the drought, none is focused on solving the long-term needs of a drought-prone, perennially water-stressed California.

Our state’s water management is complex, but the technology & expertise exist to handle this harrowing future. It will require major changes in policy & infrastructure that could take decades to identify & act upon. Today, not tomorrow, is the time to begin. Finally, the public must take ownership of this issue. This crisis belongs to all of us — not just to a handful of decision-makers. Water is our most important, commonly owned resource, but the public remains detached from discussions & decisions. This process works just fine when water is in abundance. In times of crisis, however, we must demand that planning for California’s water security be an honest, transparent & forward-looking process. Most important, we must make sure that there is in fact a plan.

Call me old-fashioned, but I’d like to live in a state that has a paddle so that it might also still have a creek.

GLOBAL CRISIS: The world’s largest freshwater lake is shrinking

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia – In Russia’s Siberian south, near the border of Mongolia, the world’s largest freshwater lake is shrinking. The surrounding communities depend on Lake Baikal, which contains about 1/5th of the earth’s unfrozen freshwater reserves, for their power, water & livelihoods. But in the past 4 months the lake’s water level has dropped so low that experts are calling it a crisis – 1 they warn could lead to conflicts in Russia over water.

The lake is now at its lowest level in over 30 years & experts predict it will keep dropping until melting mountain snow & spring rains begin to recharge the lake around late April or mid-May. The problem, scientists & environmentalists say, is a combination of climate change & growing use of hydropower. During last year’s unusually dry summer & autumn, the lake got only 67% of the freshwater inflow it normally receives; experts predict in the 1st quarter of 2015 that figure will fall to 50%.

Meanwhile, hydropower stations along the lake’s feeder rivers continue to draw water into their holding reservoirs at the normal rate, leaving the lake depleted, experts say. Lake Baikal’s dramatic drying already is causing tensions between the 2 regions that rely on it. In the Buryat Republic, upstream of the lake, wells are running empty & the area’s fishing industry is struggling w/decreasing fish populations. Downstream, the people of the Irkutsk Oblast region who depend on the lake for their water & electricity supply are demanding they continue to have access to it despite the falling water level. “Welcome to the era of water wars in Russia,” said Alexander Kolotov, Russian coordinator of the international ecological coalition Rivers W/out Boundaries. “Water is becoming the country’s most valuable resource.”

HYDROPOWER TO BLAME?
In late January, the Ministry of Natural Resources & Environment introduced daily monitoring of lake levels in an effort to reverse the drying of the lake. For now, the government is allowing the Irkutsk hydroelectric power station to continue drawing river water that might otherwise have supplied the lake in order to keep the region supplied w/heat, power & clean water. “We are trying to pursue a balanced approach that takes into consideration the interests of all stakeholders,” said ministry spokesman Nikolay Gudkov. “But that is not easy.”

But a number of scientists & environmentalists have criticized the government’s decision, saying the Irkutsk hydropower plant & the 4 others in the region are draining the lake & damaging the area’s eco-systems. Sergey Shapkhaev, director of the Buryat Regional Baikal Union, a local non-governmental organization, argues that the lake’s low water level will kill fish & crucial microorganisms. That, in turn, could result in less fish available to local communities. “Microorganisms also play a vital role in ‘cleaning up’ the lake’s water after the inflow of rivers,” he said. “A reduction in their numbers might affect the water quality.” He said drying peat reserves on the lake’s shores could mean the region will suffer more of the peat & forest fires that break out every summer.

WORSE TO COME?
For some climate experts, the shrinking of Lake Baikal is a sign of worse to come. Extreme weather, they say, will bring about major fluctuations in bodies of water all over Russia. According to a report on climate change & its consequences in Russia published by the state meteorological service Roshydromet in July 2014, the country is facing a future of unprecedented & unpredictable cycles of drought & flooding. “Russia remains a region of the world where warming of the climate in the 21st century will significantly exceed average global warming,” the report warned.

In early February, Russia’s environmental minister Sergey Donskoy told a sustainable development summit in New Delhi that the number of dangerous natural disaster events in the country increased by 6-7% annually over the last few years. He said that number could double w/in the next decade.

But there are also experts who say Lake Baikal’s current low level is nothing to worry about. Mikhail Grachev, director of the Limnological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, says there is no immediate threat to the lake’s ecosystem. Lake-level fluctuations are a common occurrence, & have not had long-term negative effects, he told RIA Novosti in January. That is of little comfort to the people living around the lake. Natalia Tumureeva, a resident & representative of the Buryat Regional Baikal Union, claims that up to 27,000 people in the area are already w/out water as the wells in villages on the lake’s shores have gone dry.

The Union has joined w/a number of other environmental NGOs – including WWF Russia & Greenpeace Russia – to come up w/recommendations for the hydropower industry on how to work w/climate patterns & decrease the burden on the lake’s eco-system. They include asking energy companies to tailor their water intake to the lake’s natural cycles & lower the rate at which they siphon water from the lake in low-water periods.

W/experts predicting that variable weather will become the norm, the region will have to learn to expect drastic changes in Lake Baikal’s water levels, experts say. “We certainly need adaptation in the area,” said Alexey Kokorin, head of the climate & energy program at WWF Russia.
